Placement Tests

MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT

All new students or transfer students without credit in mathematics will be placed into the appropriate UNO mathematics course according to their ACT or SAT Math scores, as shown below. Students with Math ACT scores of 18 or below (MATH SAT scores of 420 or below) are placed into DEVM 106 or 107, depending on major.

Students who do not have either ACT or SAT scores must take the Mathematics Placement Test to determine their placement. A schedule of test dates is given below.
 
Tests begin promptly at the time stated. Bring two sharpened pencils (#2) and a picture ID.. Call the Mathematics Department at 504-280-6331 for more information.

Student who do not have ACT or SAT scores, and have not taken the placement test by the last scheduled date will be placed into DEVM 106 or 107, depending on major.

ENGLISH PLACEMENT

All new freshman, new non-traditional students, and transfer students entering without transfer credit in English composition will be placed into the appropriate level of English through the English Placement Test. The test consists of a 40-minute writing sample. ACT/SAT I scores cannot be used for English placement. However, the SAT II Writing Subject Test is acceptable for determining placement (the SAT II Literature Subject Test is not).

 

Students attending New Student Orientation will be tested during the orientation program. For information on New Student Orientation, please call 504-280-5458 or visit http://nso.uno.edu/ . New entering freshman who choose not to attend New Student Orientation must wait and take one of the test listed below:

Continuing students or transfer students with more than 12 credits who have not previously taken an English course may take the test listed above, or they may email ept@uno.edu to register for an earlier test date. Please specify in the email either continuing UNO student or transfer student with no English credit. Students with transfer credits in English should consult their college counselors.

Students must bring a pen, pencil, and picture ID to the test. All tests begin promptly at the time stated. Please note that this test must be taken before the student is advised or registers for any English, math, or science courses.

ESL PLACEMENT (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE)

ESL Placement tests have been discontinued. All students have to take the English Placement test. All those who need ESL instruction are placed in English 1000 or the regular courses in the freshman sequence: English 150, 1156, 1157 or 1158.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES PLACEMENT

The dates for the Foreign Languages Placement Tests are listed below.  Please e-mail ForeignLanguagesLab@uno.edu  to reserve a spot for the date desired.  Come with a pencil and a picture ID.  All tests will begin promptly at the time stated and will last one hour.  Further questions regarding these tests may be directed by phone to (504) 280-6658 and (504) 280-6287 or via e-mail to the above address.
